Current stabilization methods often rely on heaters, sensors, and electronic feedback, increasing power consumption and system complexity. There is a need for low-loss photonic devices that remain stable across temperature changes without active thermal control.
\r\r
The Technology: Transparent, low-loss, athermal dielectric optical waveguide for passive temperature-stable operation
\r\r
This technology is a transparent, athermal waveguide core that minimizes temperature-induced optical drift without active thermal control. The metamaterial-like waveguide is composed of alternating nanoscale TiO2 and SiO2 layers with opposing thermo-optic responses, enabling a balanced thermo-optic coefficient while maintaining low optical loss. By reducing temperature sensitivity to temperature fluctuations, the technology can improve wavelength stability and reduce the power and system complexity associated with heaters, sensors, and feedback electronics.
\r\r
Applications:
\r\r
\r
Temperature-stable on-chip optical filters
\r
High-Q microresonators
\r
Temperature-stable optical modulators
\r
Waveguide-based photonic devices for optical communications and signal processing
\r
Optical coatings and thin-film photonic structures requiring stable interference behavior
\r
Athermal optical coatings
\r
\r\r
Advantages:
\r\r
\r
Minimizes temperature-induced optical drift
\r
Eliminates the need for active thermal stabilization
\r
Reduces power consumption and electronic complexity
\r
Maintains low optical loss
\r
Supports high-Q photonic devices
\r
Improves wavelength stability
\r
Facilitates scalable photonic integration
\r
\r\r
Lead Inventor:
\r\r
Michal Lipson, Ph.D.
\r\r
Patent Information:
\r\r
Patent Pending
\r\r
Related Publications:
\r\r
\r
McNulty KJ, Beals G, Chaitanya S, Gaeta AL, Lipson M. “Metamaterial-Like Waveguide for Low Loss and Athermal Photonics” CLEO: Science and Innovations. 2026 May 2; pp: SW1E-5.
\r
\r\r
Tech Ventures Reference:
\r\r
\r

IR CU26189

\r

Licensing Contact: Greg Maskel

\r
\r","tags":["Dielectric","Friction","Optical communication","Thin film","Transparency and translucency","Waveguide","Waveguide (optics)","Wavelength"],"file_number":"CU26189","collections":[],"meta_description":"Athermal, low-loss dielectric waveguide core enables temperature-stable, passive photonics with reduced power and complexity.","apriori_judge_output":"{\"scores\":{\"novelty\":4.0,\"potential_impact\":4.0,\"readiness\":4.0,\"scalability\":4.0,\"timeliness\":3.0},\"weighted_score\":3.95,\"risks\":[\"Technology is mature but may face fabrication yield challenges for nanoscale layer stacking.\",\"Potential IP landscape could constrain adoption if broad freedom-to-operate is not granted.\",\"Limited existing market data for long-term stability under varied environmental conditions could affect deployment timelines.\"],\"one_sentence_take\":\"Strong novelty and impact with solid readiness and scalability, but needs careful IP freedom assessment and manufacturing validation to maximize near-term adoption.\"}","inventors":["Alexander Gaeta","Garrett Beals","Karl J.
