BACKBONE: Backpacks Designed for Improved Posture

This technology is an innovative backpack designed to improve posture and overall spinal health by using two opposing straps that simultaneously apply proper force to bring the user into optimal spinal alignment. While this backpack is designed for all ages, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission noted that an estimated 5,000 children visit the ER each year with backpack related injuries , confirming the need for improved backpack designs.

Unmet Need: A backpack that promotes proper posture

A lack of good posture and adequate back support can add strain to muscles, put stress on the spine, and may lead constricted blood vessels and nerves over time. Conventional backpacks are a common source of spinal pressure as they can be overpacked with little distribution of weight causing unnecessary back stress and pain. Therefore, a backpack that supports back health, rather than hinders, would lead to reduced back strain and back-related injuries.

The Technology: BACKBONE backpacks – convenient storage and spinal support in one comfortable package

This technology is a backpack that provides perfect posture with a simple design. When the straps attached to the backpack are pulled, two opposing forces simultaneously occur to bring the user into optimal alignment. While the straps pull the shoulders back and expand the chest, the straps crossing in the back of the backpack gently pushes the firm, yet cushioned back support into the user’s spine. These two opposing forces bring the backpack closer to the user’s center of gravity and helps transfer the stress from the shoulders and spine to the hips where more weight can be supported. The custom-molded back piece located underneath the back of the backpack uses military-grade buckles that are extremely durable. Additionally, spinal-fitting plastic along with premium mountain-gear webbing and cords combine to give supreme function with elegant design. As a result, this backpack maintains comfort and posture support while being durable and sturdy enough for prolonged use.
