Bilateral hypoglossal nerve stimulation implant for obstructive sleep apnea

This technology is a medical implant providing bilateral hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS), which can be used to treat obstructive sleep apnea.

Unmet Need: Effective surgical solutions for obstructive sleep apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is commonly treated by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices, but only 50% of patients maintain daily use of these devices long-term. Unilateral hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) offers a surgical alternative that electrically activates tongue muscles to prevent airway collapse, but its single-sided stimulation can lower therapeutic effectiveness for patients with complex airway obstruction patterns. Bilateral nerve stimulation products have been developed to improve effectiveness but rely on an external adhesive patch for energy supply.

The Technology: Implant with bilateral nerve stimulation for effective sleep apnea treatment

This technology is an implantable hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) device that uses a pulse generator connected to two electrical leads to provide dual-sided stimulation to the airway, which can more effectively prevent airway collapse than unilateral stimulation. The system is fully internal, eliminating the need for continuous adhesive on the skin or a connection to an external power source. By offering a surgical solution with bilateral stimulation, this technology can provide an effective treatment for patients who are noncompliant with CPAP therapy and can expand patient eligibility for neurostimulation-based sleep apnea management.

Applications:

  • Treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
  • Airway muscle control during sleep
  • Platform for bilateral neurostimulation therapy
  • Rehabilitation of swallowing and airway protection in post-stroke patients

Advantages:

  • Increased and bilateral airway stimulation
  • Fully internalized surgical implant
  • Greater therapeutic eligibility
