In chemical synthesis, olefin metathesis is a value synthetic strategy that redistributes chemical groups around the double bonds of two olefins. This technology enables olefin metathesis using an organocatalyst as opposed to a transition metal catalyst. In addition, this technology enables metathesis between an olefin and a carbonyl, which generally requires specific conditions and different catalysts to occur.
This technology mediates metathesis without a transition metal catalyst, offering a green and economical method for chemical synthesis. As a result, this technology offers a convenient method for large scale chemical synthesis, including polymer synthesis requiring ring opening metathesis. In addition, this technology is suitable for the synthesis of biomedically relevant molecules and materials for which the trace presence of metal catalysts is not acceptable. This technology can be used for carbonyl-olefin metathesis, a generally difficult reaction to achieve.
This technology has been demonstrated in carbonyl-olefin metathesis of various aldehydes with cyclopropenes, resulting in cyclopropene ring opening.
