This technology is a touch screen enabled body map that can be used to report the anatomical location and severity of a patient’s pain.

Unmet Need: Continuous pain reporting platform

Acute and chronic pain are highly prevalent in hospitalized patients, yet pain is still underassessed and untreated in the hospital setting. Although healthcare providers use pain scales to assess the intensity of pain, these assessments are often performed at predetermined intervals like time of patient admission, overlooking how pain may fluctuate at different points of care.

The Technology: Point of care pain reporting platform

This application uses a touch screen enabled interface with a body map on which users indicate the anatomical location of their current pain. Patients then indicate in real-time the severity of pain on a 0- to 10-point Likert scale.

Applications:

  • Inpatient pain assessment
  • Pain assessment tool for non-verbal patients
  • Outpatient pain assessment for patients with chronic pain
  • Research tool to monitor pain over time in response to therapeutics and/or interventions

Advantages:

  • Electronic record keeping allows for efficient data aggregation
  • Enables immediate and continuous pain reporting
  • Allows for at-home pain reporting
