This technology is a disposable, directed airflow tent that can be placed over a patient’s head or upper body during intubation and extubation procedures in order to contain the release of infectious particles.
There is a high risk of transmission of COVID-19, as well as other viruses, during intubation and extubation procedures due to the inevitable release of viral particles into the air. Once airborne, the particles may take several hours to clear, which leaves hospital staff exposed to potential infection. Additionally, the room is unable to be used for the next patient during this time. While many operating rooms have ventilation systems, it may still take 30 minutes or more to clear all particles.
This technology is a disposable, transparent, negative pressure, directed airflow tent that can be placed over a patient’s head and upper body during intubation and extubation procedures. This tent will be relatively inexpensive and will connect to a vacuum device and HEPA filter to collect viral particles, functioning similarly to a fume hood. This technology has the potential to minimize airborne viral particles, thereby providing a safer working environment for operating room personnel and shortening operating room turnover time.
