Multimode Interference Based Coupler:
The method and system comprises of an access waveguide for inputting an input optical signal into the multimode interference based coupler. A multimode region couples the input waveguides to the output waveguides through which the optical signal propagates along a propagation axis. Two opposing sidewalls in the multimode region define the width of the coupler. The sidewalls of the multimode region have a non-linear taper inward toward the opposing sidewall. The sidewalls are smoothly continuous with continuous derivates along the propagation axis.
Multimode Region Couples Input and Output:
The system and method minimizes size, reduces optical coupling, reduces transmission losses, avoids lithographic gap fill-in and increases manufacturing tolerances.
