Indium phosphine (InP) is less toxic than cadmium, but InP-based quantum dots typically suffer from broad emission linewidths and poor performance. A method of synthesizing InP-based quantum dots with precise control over size and shape is necessary to achieve narrow linewidths and improve performance.
\r\r
The Technology: Structure and fabrication of tunable III-V quantum dots
\r\r
This technology is a method of precisely controlling the size and structure of quantum dots made from III-V semiconductor materials. The technology consists of a core-shell geometry, where the light-emitting region consists of one or more group III elements and one or more group V elements followed by a passivation region to produce monodisperse quantum dots with narrow emission spectra. For example, the light emitting region may consist of InxGa1-XP. This technology may improve the safety and quality of quantum dots used in lighting and display applications.
\r\r
Applications:
\r\r
\r
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs)
\r
Digital displays
\r
Indoor lighting
\r
Research tool for synthesis of quantum dots
\r
\r\r
Advantages:
\r\r
\r
Cadmium-free
\r
Tunable
\r
Efficient emission of radiation
\r
Narrow emission linewidths
\r
\r\r
Lead Inventor:
\r\r
Jonathan Owen, Ph.D.
\r\r
Patent Information:
\r\r
Patent Pending (DE112020003015)
\r\r
Related Publications:
\r\r
\r
McMurtry BM, Qian K, Teglasi JK, Swarnakar AK, De Roo J, Owen JS. “Continuous nucleation and size dependent growth kinetics of indium phosphide nanocrystals” Chem Mater. 2020 May 26; 32(10): 4358-4368.
\r
\r\r
Tech Ventures Reference:
\r\r
\r

IR CU19416

\r

Licensing Contact: Greg Maskel

\r
\r","tags":["Cadmium","Dispersity","Electromagnetic radiation","Emission spectrum","Indium","Indium phosphide","Light-emitting diode","Nucleation","Semiconductor"],"file_number":"CU19416","collections":[],"meta_description":"Tunable, cadmium-free III-V quantum dots with core-shell design deliver narrow emission spectra for LEDs, displays, and lighting.","apriori_judge_output":"{\"scores\":{\"novelty\":4.0,\"potential_impact\":4.0,\"readiness\":3.0,\"scalability\":3.0,\"timeliness\":3.0},\"weighted_score\":3.45,\"risks\":[\"Cadmium-free approach may shift performance trade-offs\",\"Patent-pending stage may delay commercialization\",\"Scale-up risk for III-V quantum dots\",\"Safety and regulatory considerations for new material systems\"],\"one_sentence_take\":\"High novelty in cadmium-free, tunable III-V QDs with strong potential, but readiness and scale-up remain moderate and patent/tatent- pending status poses commercialization risk.\"}","inventors":["Anindya Swarnaker","Brandon McMurtry","Jonathan Owen","Joseph Treadway","Madis Raukas","Maria Anc"],"manager":"Greg Maskel","depts":["Chemistry"],"divs":["Faculty of the Arts & Sciences"],"date_released":"2026-10-23"},"highlight":{},"matched_queries":null,"score":0.0}
