A non-irritating, effective botanical antimicrobial formulation for combating pathogens

A non-irritating, effective botanical antimicrobial formulation for combating pathogens

This technology is an alcohol-free botanical antimicrobial agent that can be used against pathogens for oral care.

Unmet Need: Irritant-free agent for combating a broad spectrum of microbes

Current antimicrobial formulations commonly used in hospital health care and personal care contain harsh chemicals that are potentially toxic cannot be used for oral care. The increasing prevalence of microbes that are resistant to multiple drugs highlights the need for more effective compounds to broadly fight pathogenic organisms. Although alcohol-based products such as hand sanitizers are a possible solution to resistant organisms, their topical use disrupts skin’s moisture and pH balance, leading to skin irritation that is susceptible to microbial infection. Currently, there are limited available antimicrobial compositions that are non-irritating, safe, and effective for repeated use.

The Technology: Alcohol-free botanical antimicrobial composition for oral care

This technology is an alcohol-free antimicrobial composition that contains botanicals, synthetic antimicrobial agents, and essential oils that effective against a broad spectrum of pathogens. It can be supplemented with solvents, stabilizers, anti-irritants, organic acids, and surfactants to enhance the formulation and reduce irritation. Flavoring agents for use in an oral care product such as toothpaste, an oral rinse, oral care wipe, or oral care gel can also be added. As a result, this technology provides an improved and effective antimicrobial that is safe enough for repeated oral use.

This technology has been validated to be effective against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Candida albicans, and Streptococcus mutans.
