Athermal, low-loss dielectric optical waveguide core for temperature-stable photonic devices
This technology is a transparent, athermal, dielectric waveguide core that minimizes thermal drifting while maintaining low optical loss for optical communications and other wavelength-sensitive photonic applications.
Unmet Need: Temperature-stable photonic devices with low power consumption
Photonic devices are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, which can shift their operating wavelength and reduce performance. Current stabilization methods often rely on heaters, sensors, and electronic feedback, increasing power consumption and system complexity. There is a need for low-loss photonic devices that remain stable across temperature changes without active thermal control.
The Technology: Transparent, low-loss, athermal dielectric optical waveguide for passive temperature-stable operation
This technology is a transparent, athermal waveguide core that minimizes temperature-induced optical drift without active thermal control. The metamaterial-like waveguide is composed of alternating nanoscale TiO2 and SiO2 layers with opposing thermo-optic responses, enabling a balanced thermo-optic coefficient while maintaining low optical loss. By reducing temperature sensitivity to temperature fluctuations, the technology can improve wavelength stability and reduce the power and system complexity associated with heaters, sensors, and feedback electronics.
