This technology is a system which automates the identification and tracking of discrepancies between as-planned and as-built construction throughout the length of a construction project.
Current methods of to monitor the progress of construction at various sites are time-intensive and costly, as they require manual collection and comparison of the current as-built status with as-planned data extracted from construction drawings and schedules. Discrepancies in construction between planned work and the actual physical status of structures can lead to schedule delays and increased costs. Early identification of these discrepancies could minimize the negative impact. However, there are currently no methods to easily and quickly share the progress of construction among project stakeholders.
This technology constructs a four-dimensional (3D + time) model of as-planned construction data, allowing the planned construction to be viewed in augmented reality at different time points in the construction schedule. At any point during construction a three-dimensional model of the as-built construction can be generated from multiple photographs collected of the construction site at that time point. This as-built model can then be overlaid with the as-planned model at that time point in the construction schedule, allowing visual comparison in augmented reality between planned and current build status. This system also includes algorithms which allow for automated identification of discrepancies between the as-planned and as-built construction models, optimizing early detection of these discrepancies to minimize their negative impact on project cost and timeline. Therefore, this technology offers an effective, simple to use method for remotely monitoring the progress at numerous construction sites.
This technology has been validated using field testing on commercial projects.
