This technology is a biomimetic, tri-layered polymer composite patch for the repair of heart valves.
Existing patches for heart valve repair often fail due to degeneration or calcification. Multiple follow-up operations are often required to repair or replace valves. Additionally, these patches are either too stiff or isotropic, and therefore are unable to mimic the native leaflet tissue properties. As such, there remains a need for biocompatible materials that are more structurally and mechanically sound in order to better mimic human tissue.
This device combines three unique polymer composite layers to more accurately replicate the mechanical properties of the tissues found in heart valves. The resulting material possesses functionality on-par with that of native aortic leaflets while maintaining structural integrity and durability. Importantly, this technology minimizes risk of thrombogenicity and calcification, and is scalable due to the facile fabrication technique.
