Bone Formation Technique for and Bone Loss and Tooth Extraction

Lead Inventor: Jeremy J Mao, DDS, PhD Bone Formation Accelated with Protein Coated Implants as a Bone Graft Alternative In some clinical situations when bone will not heal itself, a bone graft procedure is performed. However, grafting can be complicated and traumatic for some patients. Numerous alternative methods and treatments preventing bone and tooth loss have been developed. Most of these are expensive or could be more efficient. A new treatment involves the generation of protein coated implants using bone morpheonetic proteins, which can be coated on an implant to stimulate and accelerate bone growth. This technology involves an approach to economically generate high-performance protein in significant quantities, which can be used in a number of clinical applications to accelerate bone formation. Amelogenin Protein Stimulates and Accelerates Bone Growth This technology is an approach for generating amelogenin - a protein that has been successfully used to enhance odontogenesis and osteogenesis. This method can be readily scaled up to produce clinically meaningful quantities. This enables inexpensive manufacturing and clinical implementation due to the remarkable mineralization potential of amelogenin. Applications: • Treatment of bone fracture • Treatment of osteoporosis • Tooth extraction sockets • Periodontal defects • Spinal fusion • Bony augmentation in reconstructive and plastic procedures Advantages: • Inexpensive • Scalable manufacturing • Easier to tolerate than grafting Patent Status: Patent Pending Licensing Status: Sponsored Research Support
