This technology is a vitrified type I collagen gel barrier that promotes healing of ligaments, tendons, menisci, and cartilage by protecting injured tissue from blood and synovial fluid while still allowing beneficial molecules to diffuse through.
Unmet Need: Treatment that modulate the biochemical environment after musculoskeletal injury
Current treatments for ligament, tendon, muscle, and cartilage injuries primarily restore mechanical function but do not adequately control the local biochemical environment that influences tissue repair. Following injury, blood and synovial fluid can expose damaged tissues to inflammatory and degradative factors that prevent repair and contribute to tissue degeneration. Currently, there are no treatments that provide a localized, selectively permeable barrier to the injury site to help modulate the local tissue healing environment.
The Technology: Collagen barrier that promotes biochemical healing of musculoskeletal tissues
This technology is a sheet-like barrier composed of vitrified type I collagen gel that protects injured ligaments, tendons, menisci, and cartilage and promotes healing. The barrier limits negative biochemical factors found in blood and synovial fluid from entering the wound site, while still allowing critical nutrients to permeate, thereby modulating the local biochemical environment of the wound. This technology can also enable localized delivery of corticosteroids and other therapeutic agents while providing structural support to the injured tissue.
