This technology is a software for use in CAD that is able to export and import text files based on the Public Multi-Coil Information Policy (PUMCIN) file format into SolidWorks to enable full 3D representations.
Conventional magnetic field generation for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) involves coils with wire patterns designed to produce a field in the shape of a spherical harmonic function. However, the knowledge necessary to create these wire patterns is highly restricted, resulting in a bottleneck in coil design for academic purposes and forcing many groups to design coils from scratch. The multi-coil (MC) technique is a flexible alternative which allows for synthesis of complex magnetic fields via individually driven coils, and is supported by PUMCIN policy to encourage the disclosure of specific MC design details within the community. However, there currently lacks a standardized method to convert PUMCIN design files into sophisticated CAD software suites.
This technology describes an add-in for Solidworks which interfaces between PUMCIN MC coil design files and representations for magnetic field simulation in CAD software. This tool is useful in visualizing designs and interfacing with numerical modeling programs like MATLAB for combined analysis of resultant field patterns. The two-way add-in allows for electromagnetic modeling and automated machining in 3D within CAD software based on custom line pattern design solutions for MC coils. Therefore, this technology translates customized solutions adhering to PUMCIN to software files representing industry standards, and moreover provides a stepping stone for explicit data sharing to push the MRI field forward.
