Continuous, self-calibrating, cuffless, and non-invasive blood pressure monitor

This technology consists of a wearable wrist device that provides continuous blood pressure monitoring that is self-calibrating and utilizes a combination of positional sensors and machine-learning algorithms to adjust for changes in hydrostatic pressure due to arm movement.

Unmet Need: Accurate, continuous, and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring

Blood pressure monitoring is critical to diagnosing, treating, and preventing hypertension and cardiovascular disease. However, pressurized cuffs can cause discomfort and cannot be used for continuous monitoring, while current cuffless technologies still necessitate regular calibration to maintain accuracy. Therefore, there is need for a wearable, non-invasive device capable of providing continuous, accurate blood pressure monitoring.

The Technology: A continuous and accurate cuffless blood pressure monitor

This technology describes a cuffless, wearable device that provides continuous blood pressure monitoring. This technology also consists of a self-calibrating algorithm that negates the need of regular calibration of cuffless blood pressure monitors, which uses information received from biometric and environmental sensors to regularly correct blood pressure estimates. This technology furthermore describes a position-tracking algorithm which corrects hydrostatic pressure errors common in wearable wrist devices due to changes in arm position and movement using a combination of positional sensors and machine-learning algorithms. Both algorithms in this technology can be purposed to improve existing cuffless blood monitors. Used in part or in combination, this technology can facilitate more accurate blood pressure measurements, which will improve both clinical-level decision making and fitness monitoring.

Applications:

  • Continuous, non-invasive blood pressure monitoring in clinical and ambulatory settings
  • At home blood pressure monitoring
  • Fitness tracking
  • Blood pressure emergency alert systems
  • Research tool for cardiovascular function
  • Research tool for patient response to antihypertension drugs

Advantages:

  • Continuous, non-invasive blood pressure monitoring
  • Self-calibrating, cuffless blood pressure monitor
  • Accurate blood pressure readout in a wearable wrist device regardless of arm position/movement
  • Ability to be applied to improve existing cuffless blood pressure monitors
