This technology is a low-cost electrolyte composition for lithium-sulfur batteries that increases battery performance and safety.
Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems, as they provide extremely high theoretical energy densities at low material costs. However, current Li-S batteries suffer from poor cycling lifetimes due to the formation of insoluble lithium sulfides, as well as high flammability because of the ethereal solvent used in the electrolyte. To become viable, electrolyte compositions must overcome solubility and safety issues while maintaining high conductivity and cycling stability.
This technology is a lithium-sulfur battery electrolyte with high safety that overcomes the solubility issues seen in other electrolytes. Composed of a eutectic solvent mixture and a number of possible salts, the electrolyte has been used to make batteries with a high specific capacity of 1360 mAh·g-1 and excellent capacity retention over 200 cycles. All lithium and sodium sulfides and polysulfides are soluble in the electrolyte, increasing the cycling lifetime and charge capacity. Unlike traditional ether-based electrolytes, this mixture is nonflammable, greatly increasing the safety of the batteries, and is also cheaper to produce than ether-based electrolytes.
