Method to characterize lithium-ion battery degradation

This technology is pulse-based method that provides accurate details about the degradation level of lithium-ion batteries.

Unmet Need: Simple method to measure battery characteristics

Understanding real-time and accurate knowledge of internal battery parameters are important, but current methods to measure usable charge stored in a battery include Coulomb counting with battery current integration. This method is difficult in certain applications where measurement would require a full discharge or charge cycle.

The Technology: Fast, powerful, and accurate measurement of lithium-ion degradation

This assay utilizes a pulse-based method to assess lithium-ion battery degradation levels. Specially trained neuronal networks can process and then quantify the battery’s state of charge, health, power, remaining useful life, lithium inventory loss, and active material loss. This assay significantly decreases the time and complexity battery cell degradation, demonstrates at least 99% accuracy, and can be applied to multiple cell chemistry at any combination states.

Applications:

  • Characterization tool for system with hidden internal states that can be pulsed
  • Lithium-ion battery diagnostic tool
  • Electric vehicle real-time energy status detector
  • Lithium-ion battery prognostic tool

Advantages:

  • Cost-effective
  • Has demonstrated 99% accuracy in testing
  • Does not require rest periods or knowledge of capacity
  • Faster than competitor tests
