This technology is a series of antimicrobial formulations for laundry and fabric sanitizers that are stable, botanical based, and free of toxic quaternary ammonium salts.
Antimicrobial laundry and fabric sanitizers enable rapid and robust disinfection of fabrics, which helps prevent the spread of disease. However, current laundry sanitizers contain ingredients that have toxic effects on the user or environment; the most notable of these are quaternary ammonium salts, which can cause adverse health effects including skin, respiratory, and eye irritation. As laundry disinfection agents are commonly used, there is a need for potent disinfectants that are natural and safe for both humans and the environment.
This technology describes a series of antimicrobial formulations for fabric disinfection including hospital garments, carpets, drapes, etc. that are free of toxic ingredients, including quaternary ammonium salts. These formulations utilize a natural unsaturated fatty acid and other organic acids to create a botanical sanitizing composition that exhibits broad spectrum antimicrobial activity, including against viruses, and is stable for extended periods of time.
This sanitizer was evaluated after high dilution by test method EN 1276 against the bacteria S. aureus , E. coli, P. aeruginosa, E. hirae, K. pneumoniae, and S.typhimurium and passed the test by exhibiting a five log reduction.
The sanitizer was also evaluated after high dilution for validation with the US ASTM 2274-16 method (Petrocci & Clarke) test against S. aureus and K. pneumoniae and passed the test with the required log reduction.
This technology is a robust, safer alternative to toxic chemicals currently used in laundry sanitizers.
